It’s a good idea to plan several days for a holiday on Estonia’s islands, as there’s plenty to discover. In addition to Saaremaa, it’s worth visiting Muhu, Abruka, Ruhnu and Vilsandi. At the end of a packed day, you’ll need a cosy place to stay so you can start the following day’s adventures well-rested.
We don’t have big hotel chains or name brands, but even so, there are more than 350 places to stay on the islands. Accommodation ranges from a spot at a campsite to a suite in a five-star hotel, so there’s something for everyone. And you’ll be greeted by genuine locals who have both time and interesting stories to share about life on the islands.

The charm of spa hotels
Among the variety of accommodation on offer, you’ll find eight spa hotels and just as many without their own spa. Saaremaa, and in particular its capital Kuressaare, has historically offered vacationers physical healing and spiritual enrichment since the first half of the 19th century. Today, Saaremaa is a true paradise for spa lovers, and each of our eight spa hotels is unique in character. This provides a genuine vacation experience for those who love hot steam and a hot sauna and those who want to enjoy the relaxing effects of an aroma sauna.
Most of the island’s spa hotels are located in Kuressaare, but you’ll find some closer to nature outside the city as well. Many of them include a first-rate restaurant and a long list of additional services for guests.
A vacation in nature
If you value your privacy and don’t want to stay in a big hotel, there are dozens of holiday homes, tourism farms, camping sites and adventurous lodgings to choose from beyond Kuressaare. Some are close to the sea; others are hidden in forest thickets or among junipers. The natural vista from the window and the sound of the sea in your ears will help you forget your daily routine in an instant.
Accommodation establishments that are unique in some respect are increasingly popular. More and more people are looking for different experiences as opposed to regular hotels. For those looking for special accommodation, we recommend manor houses, windmills and even tree houses. Not only do these places offer comfort, but they also create a special atmosphere that makes the whole trip memorable. Imagine waking up in the atmospheric setting of a manor house, where every room carries a piece of history. Picture yourself spending the night in a windmill, where every breeze tells a story. Even more extraordinary is the experience of staying in a tree house, where nature is so close that you can hear all the sounds of the forest and look up at the stars as you lay in bed. These unique options aren’t just places to stay, but attractions in their own right that will enrich your trip and create unforgettable memories.
More than just accommodation
Be sure to take a look at the additional services the accommodation offers. Since the distances between interesting places on Saaremaa are small and the terrain is flat, it’s nice to cycle around and enjoy the unspoilt nature. Because of this, many accommodation providers offer guests the use of bicycles. But if yours doesn’t, there’s no need to throw your plans out the window: you can rent a two-wheeler from the bike hire places in Kuressaare.
When staying at a guesthouse by the sea, it might be the case that the owner even takes you fishing or leads you into the forest to pick berries. Caught and harvested with your own hands, they make for a delicious meal. Other times, you can enjoy an authentic island smoke sauna or fish from the smokehouse as an extra service.
Sustainable solutions
Sustainable solutions and living in harmony with nature are important to the locals. It’s important to us that the island remains as beautiful as it is today in the decades and centuries to come – or that it even improves. Many of the island’s accommodation establishments stand for these principles and are proud to have been awarded the Green Key certificate of quality. They have embraced sustainable solutions and work every day to reduce the environmental impact of their business.
