Intriguing stories and legends

The mysterious halls of Kuressaare Castle and the intriguing passageways hidden within its walls invite families to discover. A visit to the castle offers a captivating journey through the rich history of Saaremaa. The museum’s exhibits introduce the life on the island through centuries, offering children the opportunity to discover old weapons, medieval clothing and spark their imaginations with visions of medieval life.

The WOW Experience Centre and Café on the outskirts of Kuressaare, with its different exhibits, offers exciting experiences for the whole family year-round. For example, you can test your skills as a rally driver in a rally chair and drive cars with light beams on a circuit, test your football skills or feel what it is like to be inside a soap bubble.

In the heart of Kuressaare, alternative history centre Thule Koda offers fun for the whole family with its exhibition that highlights the extraordinary role of Saaremaa in the world. But remember: not everything you see is meant to be taken at face value! Thule Koda also features Thule Cinema, which has a diverse programme. The Apollo Cinema, located in the Auriga Centre near Kuressaare, has also become a beloved destination for many families.

Adventures on land and at sea

In addition to the many playgrounds of Kuressaare, children can also enjoy the Hallikivi Adventure Park, Leisi Adventure Trail, Kuressaare Adventure Park, Muhu Adventure Park and the Asva Viking Village. These adventure trails cater to all skill levels, offering challenges for both beginners and experienced adventurers. With safety gear and guidance from professional instructors, these parks are the perfect place for active and enjoyable family time.

On hot summer days, you can relax on Saaremaa’s many sandy beaches, while on rainy autumn days, you can unwind in the warm pools of the local spas. Kuressaare Beach, also known as Titerand, is located next to Kuressaare Park. In addition to beach activities, it is possible to rent different personal transporters (such as velocarts and self-balancing vehicles) at the start of Raiekivi Cape in Kuressaare, perfect for cruising the winding paths of Kuressaare Park with the family For water lovers, there are several spots for surfing or standup paddleboarding (SUP) on Saaremaa and Muhu.

Animal kingdom

You can also meet a number of fascinating animals on Saaremaa and Muhu. Near Orissaare, you can find Saaremaa’s first real zoo. What started as a small, fun experience farm with big dreams has been lovingly transformed by the family into something truly special. You can feel the care and passion that went into creating this place, where the animals are genuinely happy.  At the Muhu Ostrich Farm, children can hand-feed ostriches, count zebra stripes and search for a baby kangaroo peeking out of the mother’s pouch. At the tip of Sõrve Cape, in the Rabbit Village, you can pet adorable rabbits in a vibrant enclosure built especially for them. The animal and bird park of Asva Viking Village is home to around a hundred furry animals and feathered friends. You will be able to see both indigenous Viking animals and newer breeds.

On the western shore of the island, in the village of Karala, there is Lambakogu, where you can meet a unique kind of sheep. Lambakogu features 101 stone sheep, all of whom have an important role to play. An what child would not want to ride a horse or pony? Saaremaa offers plenty of opportunities for that as well.

If the weather on the island is not the best

A variety of craft workshops are ready to welcome cheerful families. In the smithy at Kuressaare Castle courtyard, you can forge your very own lucky nail. At the Good Kaarma Soap Factory, you can try your hand at creating foamy soap. At the Angla Heritage Culture Centre, you can rediscover the working methods used by our ancestors by moulding clay or engraving dolomite. Medieval Activity Centre Archebald in the heart of Kuressaare offers plenty of thrills and engaging activities.
