It would be a sin to leave the island without trying the fish. Nowadays the fish is more rare than it used to be when the nets were so full that the fishermen took only the liver out of the codfish and threw the rest back into the sea. The best fish on the island are the smoked eels and flatfish, but one should also try the Baltic herring, sprat or herring that the locals love. Look for codfish, salmon, trout and garfish, also called the "poor man's eel".
When eating out, choose Estonian cuisine. Much of it is a mixture of Russian and German cooking. There are plenty of potatoes, sauerkraut and pork, beef or mutton waiting for you in every eatery.
